Ways to Avoid Burnout

We’re all familiar with the stereotypical work hard, play hard mentality. But, have you ever stopped to wonder what working non-stop can do your mental, creative and physical needs?

Coined by the psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s, burnout describes a severe stress condition that leads to severe physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Much worse than ordinary fatigue, burnout makes it challenging for people to cope with stress and handle day-to-day responsibilities.


Here are some ways to avoid the burn:


1. Take time for yourself.

It’s okay to spoil yourself with a little TLC. Whether that means a bubble bath or just a five-minute power nap away from everyone to rejuvenate, give yourself the time you need to recharge and reinvigorate your creativity.


2. Get outside.

Go for a hike. Take a meditation class in the golden hour. Even a walk around your neighborhood to soak up that extra vitamin D can turn that frown upside down.


3. Get plenty of sleep.

Sometimes we take sleep for granted, me especially. With so many things on our minds, on our to-do list for tomorrow, or even just trying to cram in all the things we missed out on during work, it can be hard to tune out the world. I suggest 10 minutes before you plan to go to bed to turn off your electronics, relax with friends, family, or furry loved ones, and sip on a warm cup of decaffeinated tea or lemon water. Give your mind and body the time it needs to relax.


4. Set a work-life balance.

As much as it can pain you, don’t put email on your phone and if you can’t manage a second without email on your phone, turn your phone off or on silent except for emergency calls. I like to put my phone in a corner (like time out #momlife) so I’m never tempted to just check for last-minute emails.


5. Change your daily view.

One of the great things to come out of the pandemic is the acceptability of working from home or living that “freelancer life.” With that adaptability, you have more power in where you work. So, mix up your office space at a local coffee shop (#supportlocal anyone?), outside on a picnic table, or even in the sunniest place in your home. Find a place that gives you light while making you productive.
